Hole # 1

From the first tee, the golfer is introduced to the overall character of William Park’s design. An elevated tee shot into a tree-lined fairway that slopes from right to left will leave the golfer with a medium-range approach shot. This dogleg right par 4 features a well-protected green with bunkers on both the left and right and a false front which makes this a challenging but fair opener.

Hole # 2

An accurate tee shot is required on this par 4, and if you make it out of the tree-lined chute into the safety of the fairway, you’ll be left with a mid-length approach to a large green. Approach shots will have to cover a large pond that protects the green from every angle. Shots that go long risk finding fescue and will leave a difficult shot back into a green that slopes back to front.

Hole # 3

An uphill par 3 into a heart-shaped green that is well protected by bunkering. Shot placement is paramount on this hole as a center ridge splits the green, forcing balls to either side. Par is a great score on this short but challenging hole.

Hole # 4

This straightaway par 4 starts with an intimidating tee shot as the fairway climbs uphill off the start. However, a good drive will leave a reasonable approach shot. Out of bounds runs along the right side of this hole, and a good tee shot favors the left. The approach narrows as you move towards this long green; bunkers and fescue will catch errant approach shots.

Hole # 5

This long par 4 features a scenic, elevated tee shot that requires precision and distance. A fairway bunker on the right and trees to the left make this straight par 4 a challenge. If you succeed in hitting the fairway, an uphill shot into the green that is at the furthest point on the property remains.

Hole # 6

A short but challenging par 4 that requires less than driver off the tee for most players. Trees line the left and right sides of the fairway, and most second shots will be off a downhill lie. Approach shots must carry the water in front, avoid the bunker on the left and the large sycamore tree on the right. This green slopes back to front and is a great birdie opportunity.

Hole # 7

From the back tee, this par 4 features one of the most stunning views on the course — a rolling fairway with a penalty area on the right and trees to the left. A tee shot that finds the left side of the fairway will enter a speed slot that sends the ball bounding onto a level lie. The approach into 7 is extremely uphill into a two-tiered green that is surrounded by bunkers. Shots that go long will find fescue and leave a tough shot back onto the green as it runs back to front.

Hole # 8

You will have a wedge into this tabletop par 3. Despite the short length, there is danger on all sides of this green. Deep bunkers guard the front and a bunker that runs the length of the green is featured on the left. Errant shots that go long or right will run away into fescue, so accuracy is key.

Hole # 9

The number one handicap at Philmont, hole 9 is a long, U-shaped par 5. Trees line both sides of the fairway and out of bounds guards the interior of the curve. Shot placement is vital as keeping the ball on the right half of the fairway will give you the best angle to approach this long, twin-tiered green that is well protected by bunkers.

Hole # 10

This short par 4 entices golfers to play aggressively off the tee. However, the fairway slopes severely to the left, leaving shots in the tree line if not accounted for. 200 yards off the tee is adequate and will allow a full club into the green that features bunkering in front with sloping runoffs on the left, right, and back.

Hole # 11

This long par 3 maxes out at 240 yards, and the yardage is not the only challenge on this hole. The green is guarded by bunkers on the left and right and is sloped from back to front. Putts from above the pin will almost always run well beyond the hole.

Hole # 12

The green is the distinctive feature of this short but difficult par 5. It is surrounded by bunker complexes and slopes severely back to front. The false front will funnel shots 30 to 40 yards back down the fairway at times. From the tee, the fairway will undulate and slope from left to right. Fescue will catch errant tee shots on the left and a small creek guards the right. Longer hitters may be able to reach this green in two.

Hole # 13

The only drivable par 4 at Philmont, the fairway drops away into the valley before climbing back up to the green. Fescue and a fairway bunker will catch wayward drives down the right, while a cluster of trees can block you out from the left. Deep bunkers protect this tricky green that features multiple tiers and bowls.

Hole # 14

The longest par 4 on the course is an uphill dogleg right. The tee shot here favors a fade by the right-handed player, cutting off part of the dogleg to make this daunting hole a bit more manageable. A pocket of trees at the corner makes this a risky strategy but will leave a mid-or-long iron on approach rather than a fairway metal. The green is elevated from the fairway with sloping run-offs on the front and right sides. No bunkering is needed around this hole as length is the challenge the golfer must overcome. Par here is better than most.

Hole # 15

This par 4 begins the player's journey back toward the clubhouse, starting with a tee shot that showcases the rolling hills of the original landscape. Trees down the left and right pair well with the deep fairway bunker strategically placed on the left side of the fairway. The bunker may be carried by longer hitters, but should your ball find it, expect a difficult approach to the green. The dual-tiered green slopes back to front and is well-positioned between bunkers on the left and right.

Hole # 16

This tee shot has decided winners of matches since its design. A fairway bunker on the left is placed perfectly to collect well-struck tee shots. Out of bounds runs the length of the right side with little margin of error. Approach shots play less than the number on this downhill par 4, and the green is one of the largest and straightest at Philmont. If you keep the ball in play off the tee, this hole is a great scoring opportunity down the stretch.

Hole # 17

The penultimate hole at Philmont is another long par 3, 212 yards from the back tee. Players will be required to carry the pond in front to a dual-tiered putting surface. There are bunkers on the left and right that make for an exciting up and down. The green itself is sloped severely from back to front with a steep run-off and collection area in front.

Hole # 18

Our closing hole is a dogleg right par 4 that gives a great view of the clubhouse and proudly displays a large American flag in the distance. The sloping fairway will push balls right into a fairway bunker at the corner or into the trees that line the right side. Well-struck tee shots will travel beyond the bunker and funnel inside 130 yards. This split fairway leaves a ball below the feet lie for the right-handed player. The green is protected by bunkering on the left and right, with a steep slope that runs away from the player on shots that miss right.
